Morton County War Dead Monument

About the Morton County War Dead Monument

Built in 1955, the Morton County War Dead Memorial commemorates the service members from Morton County who gave their lives in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Global War on Terrorism, along with Medal of Honor recipients from the area. The names of the fallen are grouped by the conflict in which they served. Years of exposure to weather have taken a toll on the memorial, causing moisture damage that has weakened the structure, leading to crumbling and breakage in several areas. Additionally, recent research has identified several Morton County service members who are not yet listed on the memorial. The original monument was funded and installed by American Legion posts throughout Morton County.

In 2021, the Morton County Commission began assessing the condition of the memorial wall located just outside the courthouse. Two design concepts have been proposed, and while they’re not final, we've received good community feedback that will guide us toward the ultimate design.

To explore the story behind each design, click on the images below for insights into each concept as presented by Mandan architect Al Fitterer of Al Fitterer Architect, PC, and Jake Axtman of AGL Landscape Architects. These designs were initially shared with the Morton County Commission on May 9, 2024, and recently reviewed at a community input meeting.
